These reliable centrifugal pumps are non-self priming and must be mounted below the boat's water level. The deeper mounted, the more efficient they will be. Mounting the pump horizontally by use of a 90° male/female elbow will put the pump lower in the bilge, and with the outlet facing upward, it will actually help prevent airlocks.
